I have heard this about Valyrian steel, but I have never attributed it to Dawn. It is only recently that I have thought that Dawn is possibly a type of Valyrian steel (thanks to you). So, I really need to look into threads on Dawn, and it's possible power source. Perhaps it first drew power from the blood of a "fallen star(k)"? The heart of a fallen star, meaning the "heart's blood of a fallen Stark"!
I don't think the Stark's go that far back IMO. I can see Dayne's and Hightowers as descendants of the GEotD. The Starks were just a First Man family that carefully spent generations conquerering the North and maybe has some connection with the Others.
I just could never understand why SAD, who is said to be such a great swordsman, and a man who wielded Dawn, which we are told is a great advantage, could not beat up some random outlaw. This story of Arthur cutting the man until he bleed from a dozen wounds, and instead of killing the man when he lost his sword, gives him another sword, then "maked an end of it" whatever that entails, just struck me as a cat toying with a mouse. It's like the cat is telling the mouse, "hey, you are going to be dinner, but I am going to have a little fun with you first". Otherwise, it seems like SAD could have just got it over with quickly. But I might be wrong about the events, and the skill of the Smiling Knight.
Jaime seemed to think that the Smiling Knight was a heck of a swordsman he would know. Its hard to really get a true idea of what happened since we are getting this in second hand memory.
I don't know Harry Potter stuff. I only made it through the first two books, and that was many years ago. But it wouldn't surprise me if these ideas just circled and circled, adapting with each pass.
They are ok and a bit overrated if you ask me, still they have a special place in my late childhood/teens.
