Nice observation! The Thenn's are an interesting wildling group!
Thanks
(I forgot to mention that they also seem to dress like knights of House Royce, bronze + runes)
I like the comparison between Royce & Jon's appearance. They are very similar. Both have the "Stark look", but not the name. We know Royce is probably related to the Starks and we know Jon is. Sneaky, sneaky!
Sneaky sneaky indeed.
Another cool thing about Waymar is that he *has the cold inside him* (Gared: "I've had the cold in me too, lordling.") at about the same age as Jon (He never felt the fourth knife. Only the cold … ).
So it seems ten-and-seven is an unlucky age for grey-eyed, graceful boys descended from the First Men.
I really love this chapter. 1) It's GOLD for my Craster theory. 2) Sucks you in right away. No matter what else you want to learn about the Others, the Night's Watch, etc. 3) Tells us what the true story is.
Word.
Off topic, I always wondered why Royce's sword didn't shatter right away. Almost like it waited until the Other wanted it to. The Others are dramatic!
Dramatic and playful. The Other toys with Waymar the way a cat plays with a mouse, and makes a grand spectacle of his pain the way a Torero tortures a bull.
Every time I read it, I am reminded that it is the best chapter of the series... until I read some other awesome chapter. Hard to beat this one though.
It's actually the most plausible scenario IMO now that I think about it. I can't believe I've never heard it before.
Ned was forever changed that day. He is haunted by it in dreams for the rest of his life.
He went from being Robert's ethical bestie, reluctantly chasing women around the Vale... to a man haunted by ghosts.
Ned's life changed at the tower of joy, and I think Arthur is the man who changed it. Ned's sword shattered, Howland tossed a net, Ned grabbed a new weapon, and Arthur spoke his final words.
I think Arthur said something to Ned that led him to Starfall, feeling defeated even though he had just won. I think Arthur told him that Lyanna was alive, and being tended by Starfall's maester.
With Dawn in hand, Ned went. Lyanna was waiting there for him, dying. She asked Ned to save her child.
With Dawn in hand, Ned brought Jon into the world.
Ned could recall none of it. Her voice grew faint as a whisper. He made her a promise, and she smiled tremulously and sweet. Her voice grew faint as a whisper...still saying "Promise me...."
He clutched her hand as she gave up her hold on life.
