Jon's chapters for me are some of the best written and exciting ones. Pretty neat I get to open a thr ad for it
Another set up chapter where the Stark family dynamics are center stage and Tyrion and Jon meet. Jon looks and feels like a young wolf cub to me: rebellious, proud, a dramatic and broody teen. That last trait will stick with him for the rest of his life (the broody not the teen part) but the previous three attributes I mentioned change from this chapter to the end of Dance. It is remarkable how much he grows.
Some quotes I found to compare Jon to his possible tin-foil fathers:
If Bobby is his father that would be terrible for him according to his reaction here. Finding out your dad was a lazy king and a real womanizer is not exactly thrilling, especially if you had Ned Stark as a role model who yes (as of right this point in the book), possibly did a one time sidestep on his marriage vows true, but corrected himself and unlike Bobby was an active participant in his "bastard" upbringing. Obviously a Lord of Winterfell definitely can act differently than a king but still...
I find that he's also nothing like Jon in appearance whether we're talking young Bobby or older one. The one on the Trident was a giant. He's said to be muscular and tall. Built like a bull. Jon is graceful and quick which I always associate with someone on the less muscular, bulky side, leaner as it were. Granted there are quick and pretty graceful muscular built people but Bobby is not one of them. He's always described as raw power. I'm not even touching on the older Bobby! And of course eyes don't match Jon's. I know the theory of Bobby siring other kids who don't have eyes or hair like him and hence clearly Jon COULD be him, but that just means it could not as well. Toss up when t comes to genetics by features only, however since we are speculating, that's my two cents on this.
I really like Benjen. I should bump his thread. He has he seems to be the exception to the rule. Ned said that the northerners don't laugh or joke because of the weather. Benjen is different and as it will turn out not like broody Jon. His particular shade of eye color also doesn't match Jon's. not that particular thing really means proof of anything lol!
Nice. Jon notices his direwolf is different. White and makes no sound. Maybe Ghost is white to suggest his father has silver hair and makes no sound because Jon's father was quiet and introverted. I'm looking silly but I'll point out there's someone like that who would fit in nicely! I won't post no infographic, nobody worry, m-Kay?
Of course he'd choose some rebellious hot-head teenager. Never mind that it just so happens that he's a Targaryen.
For me Benjen's response was the most conclusive proof against the theory of him being Jon's father. The way he said it made me feel he'd never have given him up to be raised by Ned or anyone. It just feels like he regrets not having a son of his own, in this case Jon. And doesn't seem too concerned about the vowel of the NW when he's voicing his wish.
Well, if he ever has a kid with Dany (assuming we get there and I will take all my vitamins and anti sickness pills to have the fortitude to read boatsex in ADoS) , this definitely will be foreshadowing of what his actions will be if/when she's pregnant. It will probably be marriage or nothing. Also can be interpreted as a foreshadowing of what his feelings may be if/when he learns he's a legitimate son of Lyanna and Rhaegar.
Now I know many here don't believe the show version on this will be the same as Martin's and that's fine, but personally I would love to see Jon get a measure of peace at least on this regard, even though in the grand scheme of things with all the apocalyptic ending coming down on Westeros, it may not matter so much for him anymore.
Always thought these words will come back to be true by the end of the series. If I recall correctly this is not the only time Martin points out to Tyrion casting a large shadow. But it is impressive to notice how in a chapter that's all about Jon really, we do get so much of Tyrion's character shining through by a minimum of dialog between these two.

The king was a great disappointment to Jon. His father had talked of him often: the peerless Robert Baratheon, demon of the Trident, the fiercest warrior of the realm, a giant among princes. Jon saw only a fat man, red-faced under his beard, sweating through his silks. He walked like a man half in his cups.

His uncle was sharp-featured and gaunt as a mountain crag, but there was always a hint of laughter in his blue-grey eyes.

"He’s not like the others,” Jon said. “He never makes a sound. That’s why I named him Ghost. That, and because he’s white. The others are all dark, grey or black.”

“Daeren Targaryen was only fourteen when he conquered Dorne,” Jon said. The Young Dragon was one of his heroes.

“If you knew what the oath would cost you, you might be less eager to pay the price, son.” Jon felt anger rise inside him. “I’m not your son!” Benjen Stark stood up. “More’s the pity.”

Jon trembled. “I will never father a bastard,” he said carefully. “Never!” He spat it out like venom.

When he opened the door, the light from within threw his shadow clear across the yard, and for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king.
