OK, I'm confused. Did the mystery knight bow out the day before the last day, or after the third day?
Also, if you lose on one day, would you be disqualified from competing in subsequent days?
Lastly, does each day have it's champions? If so, it sounds like you can enter the tilt any day you like, you just have to defeat the reigning champions.
On the last day of the tilt, Rhaegar and Barristan were the only two champions that new competitors could challenge. The mystery knight would have been the third reigning champion that would have made it to the last day.
The mystery knight defeated three of the champions at the end of the second day of jousting. Which meant that as of the end of the second day, the mystery knight and two other knights were champions. Since the mystery knight no showed on the morning of the third day, the tourney went down to two champions. I think one of those two champions had to be either Oswell Whent or Rhaegar Targaryen, unless Aerys (or Lord Whent) filled the remaining three empty champion slots with three other knights. Then Rhaegar could have been given the spot as opposed to having to have defeated one of the champions to earn the spot.
If you lose, your armor, arms, and horse are forfeit, so I assume that you're probably disqualified from competing again. I guess you could ransom them back in time to reenter the lists but I'm not sure if that's allowed.
At the end of each day there should be five champions. Which makes what the mystery knight did a little unusual. He challenged three of the five champions at once, so there were technically three champions at the end of the second day.
The Ashford tourney dictated that at the end of the three days of jousting, whoever the five champions were would determine the queen of love and beauty. I assume that the remaining five would challenge each other starting the fourth day of the tourney until only one remained.
