I wish we had a Robb POV, but we don't and I guess that is that, but I do find a lot of vulnerability in him. He was in a tough situation, and at the age of 14-15. Lord of Winterfell in name, in charge of two younger brothers, one who was recently crippled and one as wild as a feral beast, then Lord of Winterfell in truth after Ned's death, Warden of the North, and then, King in the North. And leading 40,000 northmen and who knows how many others into battle. All before he was 16. It's no wonder he made a terrible mistake and turned to Jeyne Westerling for comfort. That is one of the changes the show made that I just hate. The marriage to Talisa for love made Robb look like an asshole. The only think I could see that they might have had in mind was a hint to Rhaegar and Lyanna (I was fully on board with RLJ at that time) and how love could make such a mess of a situation. And RLJ does have a bit of Paris and Helen vibe, and then ten years of Troy fighting Greece feel to it, with great heroes dying on both sides of the war, a tragedy!) Anyway, I feel such sorrow for what Robb went through. And yes, I think it's easy to not want to look at it to deeply, as a way of protecting yourself. Robb's death is just as painful, maybe more, then Ned's!
Yeah, his plate was filled pretty fast! I don't really berate him for his mistakes, as I'd probably done much worse in a similar situation at that age. He has advicers, but still!
I haven't really contemplated the changes from books to show much, but that's just because I have a strickt line seperating the two. I get the argument against big changes from show to books, but honestly they are already there WITH the books so that argument kinda falls apart for me. This change was really just weak, so if they did that just to get a rlj hint it sucked. It was a storyline I really didn't care about, until the knife was stuck in her belly. So real value was a few seconds. It felt like it was added to implement the nudity part of the actor's contract, as I hadn't read the books or heard the real story. Yes, I'm that cynical with D&D!
As the story is better in the books imo, I did probably hold back. But also he chose to let my least favorite character show his life in the south, and that certainly makes it a lot harder... I think his is more painfull than Ned's, due to his age, his plans just before getting killed, but also as it's the second punch from Martin.
Well, your connection of Brandon and his blade in Barbrey's conversation is a really strong connection in my mind to the possibility of Brandon and his sister, mirrored a generation later in Jon and Arya. Except if Jon is Brandon's, then Jon and Arya are only cousins, and that relationship would be acceptable in Westeros. Brandon and Lyanna's would not have been. Of course, Jon and Arya pretty innocently talk about shaving hair on legs, while Brandon and Barbrey talk not so innocently about shaving hair from a woman's cunt. That word is strongly associated with several women in this story, namely Cersei and Shae. I have easily considered Cersei and Ned as an option, but maybe I should consider Cersei and Brandon?
Or a possibility of Brandon and someone besides Lyanna equaling Jon. Ashara, perhaps? Also the connection to a septa is interesting. Jon talks about the Septa legs out of the damn blue, so ... We have a mysterious Septa who has born a child, who is very attractive according to Tyrion, not attractive enough no note her damn eye color but he likes her breasts just fine, but she is interesting, and many people think she could be Ashara Dayne!
Thank you! I felt the fit with B&D was rather good, and one reason I posted that part too instead of just saying this is just sexual insinuations with J&A and I'm not having that! I need to look more closely into "cunt" as with 55 mentions it's a little on the large side tonight. I can't help you with anything with Brandon and Cersei, but why not check it out so it's done?
Nicely done to get Lemore in here! To be fair to Tyrion, her boobs probably made it impossible to see her eyes. He does seem like the type to have a conversation with boobs rather than the person who's body they are a part of. (That is actually quite fascinating to behold in real life!) I do like her as Ashara, but alternatives need to be looked into further.
Maybe I am wrong on her age. The story is vague with Lyanna's birth and age. Ned and Brandon are a year apart, then Lyanna comes some time later. How long? At Harrenhal, Ned was eighteen, and we don't get an age on Lyanna or Benjen at Harrenhal, but Brandon was 19, as was Robert. Brandon died when he was twenty, according to Ned's recollection, and Ned's comment about Lyanna being 16 is very vague. 16 when she died? 16 when Brandon died? And the timeline is unstable, so I don't feel very confidant with the specifics of it.
Well, I try not to get bogged down with the timeline. It's a mess, and there I do take Martin on his word and don't sit down with a stopwatch and all that. It doesn't have to fit to the hour and day for me, just in a general timeframe.
But that's so vague too! Not sure what to believe about all that, as one thing doesn't fit with the other etc. Mostly I try to leave that alone as long as it fit some general timeframeish thing.
Well, I do have fun with it, but I do worry the more tinfoil I allow myself, the more tinfoil I an likely to want to see. It's like cocaine!
It is! And before you know it you'll be walking arout covered in it! I let my mind wander, but if there's nothing to support it within reasonable distance I let it go. If I later find something (and remember my initial thought) I'll go into it a bit more. I do try to have some control!
Well, I guess I imagine Stoneheart moving towards the girls, but she could have them brought to her, like she does Brienne. So far in the story, I think Sansa's whereabouts are still pretty hidden, but word is out that Arya Stark is in Winterfell, of course that is Jeyne Poole, but that is not widely known. I certainly think Cat's connection to Sansa is stronger, but if she can't find Sansa, she would certainly try to make a connection with Arya. And I do think the real Arya needs to come back to the riverlands at some point, as that is where Nymeria is at, her and her huge wolf pack!
Could be; I have seen or heard a theory that the hooded man is Harwin sent by Stoneheart. She seems stronger connected to Sansa as you said, but I doubt she'd ignore her youngest daugther (or at least I hope she wouldn't, but when it comes to her, I don't trust the amount of love she might have for someone. She did leave her two youngest after all...). So it depends on her overall plan, much and more seems to be happening in the Riverlands and she is at the heart of planty of that. An infiltration of Winterfell by one/a few would be easiest, whores and singers easiest of all, and we already see them using those. Hard to say what might happen with that group! Or where! I haven't really speculated much on Stoneheart, was just dissapointed she didn't stay dead...
Well, maybe I am making an easy connection between Gendry/Arya to Robert/Lyanna, but it does fit. But it could indicate Lyanna rolling on the ground with any boy/man. Any one of her brothers, Rhaegar, Arthur, Howland, Mance! Something could start so innocently and end up not so innocent very quickly. The obvious connection is Robert/Lyanna, happening maybe at Harrenhal and so before the rebellion (and that is what I have always seen with Gendry and Arya rolling around on the ground), but maybe GRRM teases us with obvious and hides the truth deeper?
My first was with Arthur, as my focus was a possible parallell with Lyanna. Something in the text started me down that road, so I pictured Lyanna trying to get away from Arthur or something like that, and before they knew it they were having a really great time in a haystack! Then the Robert-at-Harrenhall-thought came.
With this parenting stuff, I basically I think we have several red herrings, and have to choose the right one...
Poor Arya, that haircut is Yoren's fault, not hers. Good thing she doesn't care too much about stuff like that! Sansa would have a fit!
Luckily Yoren's dead now and can't mess up her hair ever again! Sansa wouldn't have made it to the gates even...
